Diane is an established mixed media artist with many commissions, solo shows, and honors. Diane had a long career as a Registered Dietitian before discovering her passion for making art. She graduated from Glassell School of Art in 2012. Diane works full time in Studio 119 at The Silos at Sawyer Yards, creating inventive artwork, exploring new techniques and materials, all while expanding upon tried and true techniques. Gelman likes solving the challenges and obstacles when making unique artwork.
Diane was recently awarded an Individual Artist’s Grant by the city of Houston for an Exhibition and Solo show, EAT!! (May – June 2025) in Gallery 200, The Silos. Diane is represented by 2 galleries, creates artwork by commission, and enters art competitions. Gelman also created a 15’h x 30’w mural, Equity for All at McGowan Street Apartments (funded by a grant from Houston Midtown Management District.)
Diane specializes in Food-based artwork, since she is an avid Foodie, with a Master’s Degree in Nutrition. Much of her artworks are hyper-realistic food sculptures and paintings with an exciting 3 dimensional aspect with collage, adding depth and interest. Her art looks so real and delicious, that the viewer often ls tempted to pick a treat right off of the artwork to eat. Diane also creates portraits and nature-based artworks, that are alive with the personality of artist and subject. Her work is a celebration and affirmation of life, exploring the unique character of the featured subjects. Diane’s paintings are improvisations on realistic images fused onto fanciful themes, with a hidden story underneath each piece. Gelman finds inspiration everywhere: from gorgeous arrays of food, colorful wild gardens, shadows and sunlight, and interesting people. Diane starts with an idea and lets the piece evolve organically from inspiration to full-blown creation with layer upon layer of textures, designs, and fantasy.
